Are you intrigued by the idea of private yoga but are unsure whether or not it's right for you? You're not alone! I receive so many questions about my services, and wanted to take the time to put some answers out there.
Why should I invest in a private session? Isn’t it just a group class taught to one person?
Have you ever gone to a group class and felt bored, left behind, or abandoned? Don’t get me wrong - I LOVE teaching group classes and know that the benefits are many. However, it’s difficult for any teacher to deliver personalized attention to each student in the room, and not every practice is going to suit the range of levels and needs of everyone.
Private sessions are all about YOU! Imagine a class that is 100% customized to your unique body and needs, without the distractions of other students or sequences that aren’t suited to you. Each session will include hand picked poses that address your physical and emotional needs, where you can move at your own pace and connect to your breath and body in a meaningful way. I will be completely committed and focused on supporting your practice during our time together, so that you get the most out of your time and effort.
Aside from the practice itself, my private sessions are designed to eliminate the obstacles or time and accountability. Have you ever left a long day at work and felt more drawn to the couch than the gym or studio? I understand the demands of living and working in New York City, and save you the added pressure of an additional commute to work out. I travel to your home or office, so all you have to do is throw on some yoga pants and get started! Not to mention, when you have an appointment, it will hold you accountable and keep your wellness goals on track!
What does a private yoga session consist of?
The Check In
We’ll begin each session with an informal chat and check in. This gives us a chance to talk about how your body is feeling, any soreness or tension that you’re experiencing, and any questions that came up after the last session. Depending on your needs at that time, I can design a session that will best serve you. Unlike a group class where a sequence might be planned ahead of time, my private lessons are generally open ended and flexible.
The majority of our time together will focus on actual poses. My teaching style is based on vinyasa flow, which loosely translates to “moving with the breath”. After a gentle warm up, we will move through a series of standing, balancing, and seated poses. All of the postures we work with will be chosen intentionally and sequenced to suit your customized session. Your practice will be supported by an open dialogue with me so you can ask questions as we move along, and proper alignment will be enforced by verbal and hands-on adjustments (unless you choose to decline physical assists, which is perfectly fine!!)
No, it won’t be graded! In order to maximize the benefits of each session, I will generally recommend 2-5 poses for you to work on between appointments. Strengthening and stretching the body happens quickest when practice is consistent, and a few minutes of yoga each day will exponentially increase your results.
What if I don’t have room in my apartment or office?
First of all, you probably do! If you have room to lay down a yoga mat, we have room to practice. I will be moving around you and don’t require much space, and you will be on your mat the entire time. However, if you prefer to work in a larger space, there are other options. For an additional fee, we can rent a space convenient to you.
How often should I schedule? Can I do 1 session to try it out?
Absolutely! I offer single sessions for new clients, so you can try it out and see if it's for you. My regular clients usually book 1-2 sessions per week, at a regular standing time. By finding a day and time that works for you, it makes it easier to commit to your practice and know that I will keep that spot open for you.
What time of day should I schedule?
Whenever works for you! The beauty of private lessons is that they are scheduled around you and your needs. I see clients in the early mornings, during lunch breaks or nap times, and in the evening after work. Just reach out and let me know what works best for you!
Do I have to have a mat and props to do private yoga?
Absolutely not! If you do not have your own mat and props, I will provide what we need. However, I do recommend investing in your own equipment and often provide a “bundle” of props based on my clients’ needs.
As always, the best way to learn about my services is to ask someone who has worked with me! Check out testimonials from some of my clients here, or visit my Yelp page here. And if you have questions that are not answered, drop me a line! Let's find out if we're a great fit to work together.
